Introducing the Cinematic Composition Challenge
Let's learn composition by analyzing movie stills
As I'm working through improving my children's book portfolio, one of the areas I'm focusing on is composition. I wrote more about it here:
How It Works
The concept is simple: We choose a movie still, analyze the composition and try to understand what makes it work in terms of storytelling.
Step 1: Each week, I’ll select three movie stills from MovieStillsDB with interesting composition and send them via chat. You’ll help me choose one.
Step 2: We brainstorm and analyze the composition and visual storytelling together.
Step 3: I’ll publish an article analyzing the selected still and will share my sketch of an illustration inspired by it.
Step 4: You’re encouraged to join in! Sketch your own version and share it in the chat or in the comments (or both!)
What I hope to learn together with you:
How to make composition more dynamic with perspective and depth.
How to use framing and negative space to strengthen storytelling.
How to develop a strong focal point

Hi Milena. I loved reading your post about learning to love composition by breaking it down into the smaller parts, which helped me wrap my head around it. As a UX designer who creates storyboards for products and services, having a good grasp of compositions is important so I can tell a more visually engaging story. Challenge accepted! :)
I can't wait to get started!!! 😁😁😁 I love a good art challenge! 🩷
